What is the most impactful place you have visited and why?
New Zealand! A number of years ago, I had the privilege of living on the South Island. The people, the history, the flora and fauna, the night sky of the country were all amazing. The awe-inspiring natural beauty of the country reminds me that we live in an amazing world.
Do you have any skills or talents that most people don’t know about?
I like to consider myself a pretty good fly-fisherman. At one point, I even worked in a fly-fishing store and received some casting lessons from a master fly-fisherman. Over the years of raising a family, I have introduced my children to spin fishing (visualize bobbers and worms from the bank!). Recently, I have since graduated my older son to steelhead and walleye trips.
Sitting alone in a big field under the stars, what are you thinking about?
The vastness and magic of the universe and our place in it. Since I was a child, I have loved the night sky and the study of astronomy. To this day, I still encourage people to “look up!” to appreciate its beauty. I love to contemplate about how it was all created, what lies beyond our little marble on the edge of the Milky Way, and what God intended of us by being here in this place at this time in its history.
